"...an American inventor and aeromedical scientist. He is best known for developing some of the first reliable mass-produced mechanical ventilators for acute and chronic cardiopulmonary care. Bird became a pilot at an early age due to the encouragement of his father, a World War I pilot and from meeting Orville Wright at an early age. He performed his first solo flight at age 14; by age 16, he was working to obtain multiple major pilot certifications. Bird enlisted with the United States Army Air Corps, and entered active duty in 1941 as a technical air training officer due to his advanced qualifications. This rank, combined with the onset of World War II, gave him the opportunity to pilot almost every aircraft in service, including early jet aircraft and helicopters." Most notable is that Dr. Bird is force behind the Bird Aviation and Invention Center in nearby Sagel, Idaho. Dr. Bird has the distiction of being one of the few persons around who has met Orville Wright, has flown with Howard Hughes, and saw the infamous Hindenburg in flight. Dr. Bird will be entertaining the group with what we are sure will be hugely entertaining stories from his experiences in the military and his travels far and wide. Venue![]()
We are sorry, but due to security, liability and logistical reasons, the Fly-In is only available to those who are participating, or are part of the aviation community. If you are planning on driving, please make arrangements with the organizers before you arrive. The easiest access to the airport is Fancher Avenue north to Rutter then east to southeast corner of the field (big Felts Field stone sign). Street arrivals for the 2009 fly-in are required to use the entry gate at the south-east corner of the field, near the intersection of Rutter and Dora. The gate has two keypads, use the keypad closest to the gate, the code will be provided in advance to those who need it. Inside the gate, follow the roadway lines before the first east/west row of hangars, bear to your left, STOP at stop sign and flashing red light (taxiway crossing), procede west until you see the left turn by the maintenance building for fly-in parking. Flight Operations![]() Field elevation is 1953' Runway 21L - 3R is the designated runway for our fly-in, with traffic patterns south of the airport at 2,800 ft. MSL. Runway 21R - 3L is certainly available if necessary, however, ATC has requested that we operate off of the south runway. Runway 21L - 3R is 2,644 feet in length, 75 feet in width Runway 21R - 3L is 4,500 feet in length, 150 feet in width Felts tower has limited hours of operation. The tower will usually clear aircraft for the 'option'. Touch-and-go's or full-stop landings will facilitate efficient use of the traffic pattern. Military style overhead approaches are acceptable to the tower. Formation flying is up to the pilots involved. Please make sure that you are qualified and current if you decide to participate in this activity. The tower personnel are used to formation over-flights in the pattern. We do not have an airspace waiver, so please follow the rules and procedures contained in the Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR's) and the Airman's Information Manual (AIM). The Spokane FSDO does not approve of "low approaches" even when approved by the tower. We have found touch-and-go's to be an acceptable alternative. Maximum speed in the Class "D" airspace is 200 knots. Consult your chart for Class "C" airspace north, west, and south of Felts Field. Noise sensitive areas exist in the hills northwest through northeast of the field! Please fly safely and respectfully! Ground Operations![]()
We ask you to please avoid firing up and pulling directly out of your parking spot. Please ask for assistance to push your airplane out into the aisle. Then fire up and be marshaled to the taxiway! Please keep in mind some of our attendees have tents!! Your parking location will be reserved and you may return to your original parking location. The fuel truck can be requested by Unicom 122.95, or call 509-535-9011. There is also a self-serve credit card fuel pump on the ramp just west of the tower. Felts Field Aviation will be offering fuel off of the truck during our fly-in at card pump prices, so give them a call. Please advise the fuel truck that you are here with the fly-in. Accomodations![]() Spokane has great lodging and dining alternatives for you. All establishments listed are within 5 miles of Felts Field.
